What makes a good kitchen?

D

Double Galley Kitchen
In the two wall galley kitchen, units and appliances run along facing walls.

E

Extractor Hood
Usually found over the hob and used to extract heat and moisture build up in your kitchen and also nasty food odours. If the extractor has an internal motorised fan check that it runs quietly or ask for the motor to be mounted on an outside wall to reduce noise.

F

Formica 
A man-made material used for worktops. It’s inexpensive, easily maintained, waterproof and available in a wide choice of colours and patterns.

Galley Kitchen
In the galley kitchen all units run along one wall. This type of layout is best suited to small, pokey kitchens.

H

Hob
That top bit of your cooker used to boil pots and pans. Though you can get a worktop mounted hob on its own. Choose from gas, halogen or induction.

I

Island
A free-standing unit, with access on all sides. Can be used to house storage, appliances, rubbish compacters and even the kitchen sink. An island with a good worktop also makes an ideal preparation area.

K

Kitchen Crown
Fancy name for ceiling structure, usually made from timber or metal, used to hang pots and pans
 
L

L Shaped Kitchen
In the L shaped kitchen units and appliances run on adjacent walls.


S

Splashback
The wall area between the worktop and the wall cupboard. A splashback is usually made from tiles or stainless steel. For the splashback behind the hob choose a heat resistant, waterproof material.

U

U Shape Kitchen
In the U shaped kitchen, units and appliances run around three sides of the room.
