Storage Solutions

Banish clutter in style with our savvy storage solutions for every room in the home.

Top storage tips

Be ruthless: it’s time to part with all those items that you swear you’ll need at some stage in the future, but actually have no discernable use for you or your family. Do a big purge with the aid of some refuse sacks and drop the lot over to your local charity shop.
Assess what you have and what you need. Is your current storage sufficient? Do you need to invest in more shelves and cupboards? If so, why not commission a designer or joiner to make some custom units.
Get resourceful with redundant nooks and niches. Make the most of spaces tucked away under the stairs or lying idle between walls. If horizontal space is not in plentiful
supply, work upwards or downwards to extend your storage.
Be clever about how you put things away. If everything has a definite home, then it’s more likely to stay there rather than get in the way.
Priortise your storage. Put everything that you use on a regular basis within easy reach.

Room by room solutions

Kitchen:
A large island will double not only surface but also storage space, and a unit on casters will be more useful still. Pull-out shelving will ensure that you use the full depth of your shelves.

Bedroom:
Under the bed has always been a handy spot to keep clutter out of sight, particularly anything that is not used on a regular basis. To keep your wardrobe as tidy and well-organised as possible customise it - include shelving that will cater specifically for shoes, shelves for sweaters, a basket for laundry, etc.

Bathroom:
Whittle your bathroom goods down to those that are purely beautiful and useful and you’ll find that there is no need to hide anything away. Towels can look pretty if rolled up tightly and slotted into recessed shelving in the wall.

Living room:
Consider a wall of floor to ceiling open shelving or make a statement with a funky, sculptural CD wall unit. A sofa with seating that lifts up or pulls out to store magazines and living room odds and ends is a good investment, so too is a side table and low level coffee table with open shelving and drawers.

Hallway:
Under the stairs is a great place for storage – but don’t just chuck anything and everything into this space and close the door on it. Go for a mix of open shelving, hooks for hanging up coats and a small chest of drawers – if you have the space. Under the stairs is also a great place to house bulky white appliances such as the washing machine and tumble dryer. Hide all your storage behind sleek, streamlined doors. For a super discreet look don’t put handles on the doors.
