Decorating with wallpaper

wallpaperWallpaper is back from the cold in the form of funky geometric prints, graphic floral images and traditional damask patterns in bold colours. House and Home reveals how to wake up your walls with the latest designs

Wallpaper is perfect for livening up any room and transforming it from from bland to beautiful - provided of course you pick the right design for the room in question and know exactly what to do with it. To avoid disappointment ask yourself…

  • What is the room like?

A bold design will really liven up your bedroom but it might not be conducive to a good night’s sleep.

  • Which walls are going to be papered?

Small prints are perfect for small rooms where they can really be seen without overwhelming but will look lost in big rooms. Dark colours and large patterns will make a small room look even smaller. If you’re only papering one wall, choose a wall that’s facing a door for maximum impact, ideally a chimneybreast or in a bedroom, the wall behind the bed.

  • Is your choice of paper suitable for the room?

In bathrooms where steam can be a problem it is advisable to use a washable paper. Embossed papers are perfect for concealing flaws on less than perfect walls.

  • Will the room benefit from wallpaper?

Striped papers are peferct for adding height to short spaces with a low ceiling. If your room is too big to be comfortable, create a more intimate atmosphere with moody lighting and papers with metallic finishes.

Wallpaper isn’t just for walls…let wallpaper work its magic on your furniture, doors and even lighting.

  • Give the inside of presses and shelf surfaces a new lease of life by lining them with your favourite wallpaper pattern.
  • Give a boring old lightshade a new lease of life by covering it with some pretty patterned wallpaper.
  • Why not make a fabulous piece of wallpaper into a work of art by stretching it over a canvas or placing it inside a funky frame.
  • If you’re super-skint, start hoarding wallpaper samples. When you have accumlated a sizeable pile, use them to make a unique statement by pasting them together, overlapping in a pattern, on a feature wall.
  • Liven up panelled doors by pasting some funky patterned wallpaper in the panels.
  • Or, create a funky kitchen splashback by using a length of wallpaper behind clear glass or Perspex.
