How to repair old wooden floorboards
Don’t despair if your beautiful, old wooden floor is showing signs of age, cracks gaps and tiny holes can easily be repaired. All it takes is a little know-how says PPA Editor of the Year and House and Home Editor, Roisin Carabine.

There are several reasons why gaps appear between floorboards. Shrinkage is a common cause, as is splintering due to pest or disease attack. If the wood is diseased just replace the board with a new one.
Tiny cracks
Fill tiny cracks with a good multi-purpose wood filler, smooth with a sandpaper whey dry and stain, dye or paint over.
Small gaps
Fill small gaps with papier mâché or wood filler, building up layer upon layer once the previous one has dried.
Large gaps
If there are just a few gaps, drive in strips of matching wood and tap down until level with the surface. Total replacement of the boards may be necessary if damage is more severe.
