Ancient, historical and always contemporary In 1664 the Right Rev. Robert Maxwell purchased Waldron Estate and renamed it Farnham. It remained in the Maxwell family until 2001. The original Farnham House was enlarged and ornamented between 1801 and 1810 by the fashionable architect Francis Johnson, who was responsible for the GPO and the Chapel at Dublin Castle. Agriculture, science, botany, topography and geology were prominent interests of the Maxwells through their generations at Farnham and the creation of a unique world within the walls of the Estate seemed to be something of a family preoccupation. Over a period of 337 years a succession of Lord and Lady Farnhams maintained and ornamented the aesthetically outstanding landscapes at Farnham Estate.They collected plant and tree species from around the world, and even had a geology museum within the house. Indeed, the Maxwells' last act at Farnham was to plant a number of trees to mark the millennium. Farnham is an estate created by hundreds of years of caring attention.
