The village also plays home to an important cathedral and a climbable round tower. The cathedral has many a famous son, including internationally renowned philosopher Bishop Berkley, who later gave his name to the Californian town of Berkley. Perhaps the most popularly celebrated son of Cloyne is the legendary hurling star Christy Ring, of whom there is a statue in Chapel Street.
MEADOW OF THE CAVES, Cloyne really came into its own in 560BC when St. Coleman founded his monastery here. Built on a network of caves, it is believed that during penal times Priests used these as an underground link to the catholic graveyard, where they would say mass for their parishioners. On the outskirts of the village sits Castlemary, seat of the Longfield family since the 17th century. In their day they were one of leading and most influential Anglo-Irish families in County Cork. The remains of a druid altar can still be seen near the castle's orchard.
